Caring for a painted bag: seven simple habits

Care · 21 September 2026

A painted surface is more delicate than the leather beneath it: sunlight, moisture and friction reach it first. Keeping your piece as vivid as on the first day takes a few simple habits, not expensive products.

The bags in the collection are made to be used, not to wait in a display case. But a painted surface is more delicate than the leather or canvas beneath it, and sunlight, moisture and friction reach it first. The good news: protecting the colours takes a few habits, not expensive products.

1. Keep it away from sunlight and heat

Direct sunlight fades colours over time, and heat dries out leather. Don't leave your bag on a windowsill, on a car dashboard or next to a radiator. At home, choose a shaded cupboard over a shelf that gets the sun all day.

2. If it gets wet, blot, don't rub

If your bag is caught in the rain, dry it by pressing gently with a soft, dry cloth instead of rubbing, then let it dry on its own at room temperature. A hair dryer or radiator dries out the leather and the paint, not just the water.

3. A dry cloth is all it needs

Wiping the painted surface with a soft, dry cloth is enough. Chemical cleaners, alcohol, wet wipes and abrasive sponges can dissolve or dull the paint. If you use a leather conditioner, keep it off the painted area and test it first on a small, hidden spot.

4. Let perfume and hand cream dry

Perfume, hand cream and make-up contain alcohol and oils. Wait until the cream on your hands has been absorbed before reaching for your bag, and spray perfume before you pick it up.

5. Watch out for friction

Constant rubbing is a painted surface's worst enemy. The side of a shoulder bag that rests against denim or rough fabrics can wear over time, and dark denim dye can transfer onto light leather. A quick look at which side you carry it on, and what you're wearing that day, goes a long way.

6. Dust bag, stuffing and air

When you're not using it, keep the bag in its dust bag or box; plastic stops the leather from breathing. Filling it with acid-free paper helps it keep its shape. Don't hang it by its handles for long periods, and don't squeeze it under other bags: painted surfaces shouldn't rub against each other.

7. Don't try to repair damage yourself

If you notice a scratch or worn spot, don't paint over it or cover it with a product; a well-meant touch-up can leave a more lasting mark than the work itself. If you have a question about your piece, you can write to us through the contact page.

The same rules apply to the objects in the collection: a spot away from the sun, a dry cloth and a little care.
